AMETHI: Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday held an impressive roadshow in family pocket borough Amethi as a huge crowd chanted slogans praising the Congress vice-president who has been representing the constituency for the past 1o years.

A large number of Congress supporters had gathered here to catch a glimpse of both Priyanka and Rahul who is pitted against BJP's Smriti Irani and AAP's Kumar Vishwas in the May 7 Lok Sabha battle for Amethi seat.

The vehicle carrying them moved slowly as the huge crowd waved Congress flags and shouted slogans eulogising Rahul.

Some enthusiastic supporters showered rose petals at them.

Both Rahul and Priyanka, guarded by SPG commandos, stepped out of the vehicle to pay obeisance at a dargah.

The 2km roadshow by the Gandhi scion comes on the eve of BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's campaign in Amethi in support of Smriti Irani.

India complies with Lanka's terrorist list: Report

COLOMBO: India has complied with Sri Lanka's ban on 16 Tamil diaspora groups and 424 of their supporters on grounds that they are allegedly involved in terror activities while the US ignored the list, a media report said on Sunday.

Some of the designated organizations had met the US assistant secretary of state for Central and South Asia, Nisha Biswal last Thursday in Washington, the Sunday Times reported.

A US embassy spokesman in Colombo confirmed the meeting. Sri Lanka had designated 16 Tamil diaspora groups and 424 individuals as terrorists late March.

They are based in many countries including India. Sri Lanka was planning to ask the foreign governments to crackdown on them, the government sources earlier said.

Canada became the first country to publicly state that Sri Lankan order would be ignored.

"Sri Lanka's action has no legal effect in Canada," a joint statement from the Canadian foreign minister John Baird and his deputy Lynne Yelich had said.

India has acted on the information contained in the order. One of the 424 persons named, who was returning to India from the UK for medical treatment for his mother was turned away.

A similar course of action has also been taken by immigration officials in Tehran, Iran when one of them visited the country.

Sri Lanka said that they are in possession of information on substantial amounts of money remitted from overseas for planned terrorist activity.

In Bengal, Mamata threatens to ‘rock Delhi’ as Modi says he will deport Bangladeshi migrants

RANAGHAT (West Bengal): Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday challenged Narendra Modi to deport any resident of West Bengal and threatened to storm Delhi.

"Let him touch any person, I will rock Delhi," Banerjee said without taking Modi's name and accused the BJP's prime ministerial candidate of doing politics of division to disintegrate the region.

Modi told election rallies, first in Serampore on April 27 and at Asansol on Sunday, that Bangladeshi migrants who were allowed into the country for "vote-bank politics" would be sent back, while refugees who were thrown out of Bangladesh on religious grounds would be greeted with open arms.

Banerjee also accused Modi of ignorance about Bengal's history.

"He does not know the history of the nation, heritage and culture of Bengal and is only doing politics to disintegrate this region by pitting one against other and playing politics of division, which will not be allowed."

She pointed out that during undivided India and Bengal people came here from other parts to live and said Modi was unnecessarily creating a rift between Bengali and non-Bengalis.

"I have never seen politics at such a low," the West Bengal chief minister said addressing a poll rally here in Nadia district where election will be held in the last phase on April 12.

"If a party can go to this extent without being in power, it will definitely burn the country if it comes to power," she said alluding to the BJP.

Banerjee also attacked Congress and CPM for spreading canards against her and speaking lies, and referred to alleged concerted efforts by opposition parties, including the BJP, to defeat Trinamool Congress.

"We knew about such practice of CPM for the last 34 years, but if Congress follows them what will be the fate of the nation?" she wondered.

"Now the BJP is speaking what CPM is saying. Congress is also walking on the same path. A section of media is also helping them to carry on this campaign against Trinamool Congress. But they will not succeed," Banerjee cautioned.

She asserted that the BJP would not be able to win a single seat in Bengal including that of Darjeeling, which they won in 2009.

Earlier in the day, lashing out at the Trinamool Congress for claiming to be a do-gooder for Muslims, Narendra Modi said the minority community was far better-off in his state Gujarat than West Bengal.

"Muslims in West Bengal have to force the Trinamool Congress government to do politics of development for them instead of indulging in vote-bank politics," he said.

Raising the issue of Bangladeshi migrants who were allowed into the country for "vote-bank politics", Modi said they would have to go back, while refugees who have been thrown out of Bangladesh on religious grounds would be greeted with open arms.

"BJP's position is very clear, vote-bank politics has destroyed the country ... Those who are Bangladeshi infiltrators, will have to go back," he said.

Chennai railway station blasts: Police claim 'positive clues'

CHENNAI: Some more suspects in the twin bomb blasts in the Kaziranga Express have been identified, Tamil Nadu Police said on Sunday claiming it has got "positive" clues on the explosions that killed a woman passenger and left 14 others injured.

A careful perusal of CCTV footages at the Chennai Central Station, Bangalore City Railway station and those between Bangalore and Chennai has led the CB-CID police, probing the explosion to zero in on some "positive" leads, a senior official involved in the investigation said here.

He said "some more suspects have been identified" but declined to elaborate, saying it would hamper investigations.

The official said a police team sent to Guwahati was camping there and questioning some of the passengers who travelled by the train looking for more clues that could help them track down the perpetrators of the blast.

The CB-CID police have sought the help of experts to confirm whether a suspect who boarded the Bangalore-Guwahati express at Bangalore and who was masking his face with handkerchief, was the same person who was seen hurriedly alighting at Chennai, the official said.

Police are also looking at the possibility of the blasts being the handiwork of Indian Mujahideen or some sleeper cells, he said.

A police team is continuing investigation at Bangalore. The CB-CID has also deputed a team to Patna against the backdrop of investigations indicating that explosions there hours before Narendra Modi's "Hunkar" rally, was similar to that of Chennai blast.

24-year-old woman techie, Swathi, hailing from Guntur, was killed and 14 people were injured in the low-instensity twin bomb blasts on May day.

Rift in JD (U), Sharad Yadav slams Nitish Kumar for playing caste politics

NEW DELHI: Fissures in the Janata Dal (United) came out in open on Saturday with the party chief, Sharad Yadav, slamming Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar for playing caste politics.

The JD (U) chief also accused former Bihar chief minister and RJD president Lalu Prasad of dividing the people on caste lines in the election season.

"Both (Nitish and Lalu) have pursued the politics of caste. I am taking responsibility for the pathetic condition of the state because I helped Lalu and Nitish in governing Bihar. Unfortunately, both believe in caste-based politics," Yadav, who is contesting from Madehupra, said during a rally in Muzaffarpur.

The BJP took Sharad Yadav's statement as an opportunity to hit back at its former ally. BJP's national spokesperson and candidate from Bhagalpur Lok Sabha seat Shah Nawaz Hussain said his party welcomes Sharad Yadav's view.

Earlier, difference of opinion within the JD (U) over extending support to AAP candidate Arvind Kejriwal also became evident with Bihar party chief Basistha Narayan Singh saying the organization should have been consulted before going public on the issue.

"There should have been more consultation within the party before going in public over support to Kejriwal," he said seeking to keep distance from announcement of JD(U) general secretary K C Tyagi on the issue.

Rajan a good economist, should continue as RBI chief: Yashwant Singh

NEW DELHI: Senior BJP leader and former finance minister Yashwant Singh on Saturday said Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan is a good economist and should continue in his position.

"If it is in my control, I will continue with him. He is a good economist. Till now he has proven himself as a good governor and he should continue," he told Focus TV.

Sinha's statement comes in the backdrop of speculation that the RBI Governor could be changed if the Narendra Modi-led NDA comes to power after the general elections. The nine-phase election is under way and counting of votes is scheduled on May 16.

Rajan, a career economist, was appointed by the UPA government and assumed charge at the RBI on September 4, 2013.

He was earlier the Eric J Gleacher Distinguished Service Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago's Booth School. Between 2003 and 2006, Rajan was Chief Economist and Director of Research at the International Monetary Fund.

On noted economists Jagdish Bhagwati and Arvind Panagariya showing interest in playing some role if a Modi-led government is formed, Sinha said, "Both are world-class economists and any kind of help from them will be welcomed."

Replying to a question on reducing import duty on gold, he said: "The gold business, which is a source of employment for lakhs of people, has been ruined. We need to change the system."

Asked who could be the finance minister in an NDA government if the coalition wins, Sinha said it will depend on the Prime Minister.

However, he said "it will be good if a person with knowledge of economics becomes finance minister."

Army deployed in Assam as thousands flee their homes

BARAMA: Troops were deployed to the state of Assam on Saturday after 31 Muslims were gunned down in three days of what police said were attacks by tribal militants who resent the presence of immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh.

The unrest in the tea-growing state comes towards the end of a marathon election across India that has heightened ethnic and religious divisions and which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) looks set to win.

Security forces found the bodies of nine people with bullet wounds on Saturday, six of them women and children, the third day of violence that police have blamed on Bodo tribesmen attacking Muslim settlers as punishment for opposing their candidate in the election to the parliament.

Bodo people are followers of the local Bathouist religion.

"We are scared to live in our village, unless security is provided by the government," said Anwar Islam, a Muslim who had come to buy food in Barama, a town about 30 km (20 miles) from the villages in the Baksa district where the violence erupted on Thursday and Friday.

--

He said men armed with rifles had come to his village, Masalpur, on bicycles and had then fired indiscriminately and set huts on fire.

Bodo representatives say many of the Muslims in Assam are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh who encroach on ancestral Bodo lands. In 2012, clashes erupted in which dozens of people were killed and 400,000 fled their homes.

In addition to that violence, Assam has a history of sectarian strife and armed groups fighting for greater autonomy or secession from India.

Modi faces criticism

Election candidates, including the BJP's Narendra Modi, the front-runner for prime minister, have been calling for tighter border controls.

On Saturday, the ruling Congress party blamed Modi of using divisive rhetoric. "Modi is a model of dividing India," said Union law minister Kapil Sibal.

Modi said last week that illegal immigrants from Bangladesh in the nearby state of West Bengal should have their "bags packed" in case he came to power, accusing the state government of being too soft.

"Modi should have been more responsible in his utterances," said Sabyasachi Basu Roy Chowdhury, a political science professor at Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal.

"His words can be very damaging since, even if we consider that Bangladeshis are living here illegally, there is a question of human rights too."

But the BJP said it was the responsibility of the Congress party that governs the state to ensure law and order and crack down on militants.

Soldiers in convoys of trucks mounted with rifles were patrolling on Saturday in Baksa district, where some of the attacks took place.

Bodies covered with white sheets were laid out in a row at a police outpost on the edge of Barama for identification by relatives.

Most Muslims were staying together in big groups, villagers visiting the market in Barama said. Security forces found three children hiding in forests near the border with China.

The Bodo region faces what residents say is a tight race between a Bodo and a non-tribal candidate. A policeman was killed during the voting when the region went to the polls on April 24.

"There's heightened tension because of the election," said Ajai Sahni, executive director of the Institute for Conflict Management in New Delhi, although he said it was too early to be certain about exactly what had provoked the attacks.

Country's staggered voting concludes on May 12 and results are due to be announced on May 16.

Modi is tainted by accusations that he turned a blind eye to, or even encouraged, Hindu-Muslim riots in 2002 in Gujarat, the state he has governed for 13 years. More than 1,000 people, most of them Muslims, were killed.

He has always denied the accusations and a Supreme Court inquiry did not find evidence to prosecute him.
