BJP aiming for 300 seats on its own, Venkaiah Naidu says

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 21 Maret 2014 | 22.44

VIJAYAWADA: Senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday said his party was aiming to win 300 seats on its own in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

Naidu addressed the first meeting of the executive committee of the residual Andhra Pradesh (Seemandhra) unit of BJP here.

Regional parties by themselves can not rule at the national level and they should support the national parties, he said.

Some regional outfits may form an alliance with BJP in Andhra Pradesh, he said.

Union finance minister P Chidambaram was "running away" from elections and many other Congress leaders were doing the same thing, Naidu said.

The Congress-led government failed all-round, but especially on the economic front, he said.

Chidambaram left economy in a 'shambles', Jayalalithaa alleges

KARAIKUDI (TN): AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa on Friday charged Union finance minister P Chidambaram with leaving the country's economy in a "shambles" and bringing it to the "brink of destruction".

Launching a sharp attack against Chidambaram at his hometurf, Jayalalithaa declined to accept his victory from Sivaganga Lok Sabha constituency in 2009, questioning him why he was not ready for a recounting in the controversial poll where he defeated AIADMK candidate.

"Did Union minister Chidambaram, elected from your (people) constituency do anything for you? No. Neither has he cared for you nor the country's economy. His actions are also reason for the economy being in a shambles," she said while addressing an election rally.

The TN chief minister recalled that he had held the Finance portfolio from May 2004 to November 2008 and later allotted the same in August 2012.

"During his term the country's growth rate has dipped, inflation has increased, value of Indian rupee against US dollar has dropped, exports have decreased and imports gone up. Overall Indian economy has gone to the brink of destruction," she said while lambasting Chidambaram.

His achievements in the constituency were confined to inaugurating about 200 new bank branches, "which he boasts" and this alone would not mean growth.

The growth of various sectors like agriculture, industry and education was true growth, Jayalalithaa said while listing out her industrialization efforts for the backward South Tamil Nadu including setting up industrial parks and asked what steps Chidambaram had taken.

"He is an expert in cutting down on state's financial resources and dumping expenditure on them besides burying democracy," she said.

70-year-old assaulted girls on pretext of checking their homework

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 20 Maret 2014 | 22.44

DEHRADUN: As Uttarakhand comes to terms with the sexual assault case involving a dozen minor girls and a 70-year-old residential school owner, the police have begun the process of recording the kids' statements in front of a magistrate. On Thursday, officers of Uttarakhand police's anti human trafficking wing met the children and heard their version. The details that came out have shocked and horrified the investigators.

The girls, aged between six and ten, revealed that Chandra Singh Karki would come to their dormitory at odd hours and take them to his office on the pretext of checking their homework. "Karki would then ask the little girls to massage his body and stimulate his private parts. He would often force them to undress and sleep with him and have oral sex," D L Verma, in charge of the Haldwani unit of the anti human trafficking wing, said. Verma was heading the team which questioned the girls first. Their deposition was also videographed to be produced as strong evidence before the court.

"Such statements are recorded under section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code and have evidentiary value in the court of law," Uttarakhand DGP B S Siddhu said. The top cop added that the Pithoragarh district police have already moved a lower court for the same. "We hope to get all the girls' statements recorded in front of a magistrate within a couple of days."

A retired Hindi lecturer from government inter college in Nainital, Karki is accused of allegedly raping and molesting close to a dozen minor girls at his co-educational Himalayan Public School in village Chaukori in Pithoragarh district. Many of the girls confirmed having been sexually assaulted by Karki several times in the past. "In fact, one of them was being exploited by Karki for the past five years. The girl is psychologically disturbed because of it," Verma said.

Verma added that Karki's daughter and son, who hold the position of principal and manager in the school meant for economically weaker children, were aware about their father's act. "Some girls have told us that Karki used to threaten them by saying that he would inform the school principal and manager if they did not cooperate."

Meanwhile, sources said at least six girls, who may have narrated their ordeals to their parents, have left the school about a year ago and are now studying in government schools in their localities. "We are contacting these children and their parents so that their statements too can be recorded. Most of these parents are, however, reluctant despite our assurance that their identities will be kept secret," Pithoragarh SP Vijay Singh Karki said.

He added that Karki is presently being interrogated and medical reports of the minor girls are being awaited.

Why Vanzara not sent to Mumbai jail? asks CBI

AHMEDABAD: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday raised a question on the inordinate stay of D G Vanzara, suspended DIG and an accused in fake encounter cases, in Sabarmati central jail. The CBI told a sessions court that only Vanzara and jail authorities would know why his custody had not been transferred to the jail in Maharashtra.

While opposing Vanzara's bail application in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case, the probe agency submitted to the court that the cop was brought from Taloja central jail to Ahmedabad for interrogation. After his remand was over in the second week of June 2013, the magisterial court sent him back to Sabarmati jail with instruction to send him back to Taloja jail, where he was in judicial custody in the 2005 Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. Vanzara and other cops were shifted to Mumbai jail in November 2012 after the SC transferred the case.

The CBI said in its affidavit that despite standing order by Mumbai's special CBI judge S G Dige issued on May 30, 2013 and the Supreme Court's direction while transferring the trial outside Gujarat, "For the reasons best known to Vanzara and the jail authorities... Vanzara is still lodged at Sabarmati central jail, instead of undergoing judicial custody at Taloja central prison, Maharashtra".

Besides, the CBI urged the court not to grant bail to Vanzara on the grounds that there were instances in the past in the Sohrabuddin encounter case of attempts by the accused cops of influencing witnesses. And it was this factor that played a major role in the apex court's decision to transfer the case outside Gujarat for fair trial.

The agency cites the chargesheet that shows how Vanzara, along with other senior officers, was involved in the conspiracy of killing Ishrat and three others. Further hearing will take place later this month.

Vanzara is behind the bars for past seven years in the Sohrabuddin encounter case.

A dance with death : Women fighter pilots of the World War II

Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha might believe that women are physically not suited to fly fighter planes, history of military aviation, however, refutes his assumption. Starting from the Second World War to the ongoing war in Afghanistan, many countries have deployed women fighter pilots at combat positions and many of these women have played decisive roles in the theatre of operations.

India is the only major military power which even today discriminates between men and women when it comes to flying fighter planes. It has been almost two decades since air forces from across the world put no bar on women becoming fighter pilots. Most countries of Europe along with US, Canada, South Africa, South Korea and Israel have women officers serving as fighter pilots. Last year Ayesha Farooq became Pakistan's first female fighter pilot to qualify for battle. Among the six female fighter pilots in Pakistan's air force, she was the first to pass the final exam. In 2013, China too inducted 16 female fighter pilots in it's Air Force.

On record, Turkey is the first country to allow women to fly a fighter plane. In 1937, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's adopted daughter Sabiha Gokcen became world's first combat pilot when she took part in the military operation against Dersim rebellion. From 1942 to the end of the Second World War, Nazi occupied areas witnessed several raids of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment. The soviet female military aviators which constituted the Regiment were dubbed Night Witches by the Nazi troops. Formed by Colonel Marina Raskova, the 588th flew only in dark, because of the weight of the bombs they flew at low altitude and carried no parachutes; they had no radars and navigated through maps and compasses. Despite their inferior planes the 'witches' managed to carry 30,000 missions and they were considered major menace by the Nazi forces.

After the Second World War it took almost 50 years for most of the major military powers to induct female fighters in their air forces. In post Second World War period Canada became the first country of industrialised world to have women air force pilots. In 1989 Dee Brasseur and Jane Foster qualified as first female fighter pilots of Canadian air force.

In 1993 Jeannie Leavitt became post world war's first female combat pilot after her induction in the American air force. In 2012 Leavitt became world's first female wing commander of any major air force when she was promoted to command 5,000 airmen at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina. At that time she had logged about 2,700 hours of which 300 was in combat over Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2000, the UN Security Council unanimously passed a resolution accepting the inherent equality of women and men in all aspects of international peace and security. Today Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, New Zealand and Norway put least restriction and women can join virtually any military position including infantry and artillery combat units.

Naxal-infested areas are very much under security forces’ control: Vijaykumar

CHENNAI: Naxal-infested areas in the country are very much under the control of the security forces despite the fact that naxalites killed several CRPF men in the recent past, said senior security advisor to the Ministry of Home Affairs K Vijaykumar on Thursday.

Vijaykumar, the former Tamil Nadu DGP, was speaking after receiving the 'distinguished alumni award' presented to him by the Madras Christian College (MCC) alumni association as part of the college's 175th year celebrations. Besides Vijaykumar, B Muthuraman, chairman for TATA International Limited, was also honored with the award.

Addressing newspersons after the function, Vijaykumar said the Central Government is drafting a new strategy to ensure a peaceful polling in all states. "We cannot use the same strategy used during the last parliamentary elections. We will work on a new plan and enforce them with the help of the state police heads," Vijaykumar said.

"There are always ups and downs in the security perception. We cannot condemn any safety procedure merely citing one violation. There will be some resilience while implementing any new system to the already existing system. We cannot conclude that the Maoists have taken upper hand referring to one ant-naxal operation," he said.

Coalgate: CBI to record statement of key PM aide TKA Nair

NEW DELHI: Nearly one-and-a-half-years after starting probe in Coalgate, CBI is likely to examine as a witness T K A Nair, advisor to Prime Minister, in connection with alleged irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks.

The sources said agency is likely to record the statement of Nair on the issue of allocation of Talabira coal block to Hindalco.

In its FIR against Hindalco, CBI has alleged that the company got the coal block even after being rejected by the screening committee.

It alleged that the only material change that took place between rejection of Hindalco's application by the screening committee and allotment were two letters routed to the then coal secretary P C Parakh through the PMO and his personal meeting with Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of Aditya Birla Group.

Nair's comments may also be sought on some other coal block allocations especially those allotted when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was holding charge of the coal ministry.

The sources said Nair's examination is likely to take place by the end of this month as the apex court has directed the agency to complete its probe in the coal scam by April end.

They said the agency needs to seek his clarification as it is going to wrap up its probe and inform the Supreme Court about the outcome of the case.

CBI will be filing its final reports in five coal scam cases before March 26.
