NEW DELHI: Under attack from BJP, former Union minister Virbhadra Singh on Tuesday brushed aside allegations of income tax evasion, money-laundering and forgery as "false and fabricated" and threatened action against those behind the "malicious" campaign ahead of Himachal assembly polls.
Lashing out at BJP leader Arun Jaitley for making the allegations, the former Himachal chief minister and state Congress chief said the "malicious" campaign against him is being carried out to divert his attention from the poll campaign and create confusion in the minds of voters.
"The information carried out by a section of the media is factually incorrect and details are being put out to create confusion in the public, and even divert my attention from the election campaign," he said.
Singh said, "the assessment proceedings are still pending before the appropriate authority for scrutiny. I have not received any questionnaire in this matter from the authority concerned...if there is any query I will reply to everything."
"Their ill-timed malicious campaign cannot replace facts and truth," he said, adding "I will take appropriate action against those who are involved in such malicious campaign against me after the elections are over."
"I want to tell those trying to defame me during these assembly elections that I leave to the public of Himachal Pradesh to decide my fate - let the people judge me and let the IT department ask me whatever they wish to," Singh said claiming that people knew him well as he had spent 50 years in public life.
Jaitley alleged that Singh had altered his income tax account books from 2008 onwards to show a forged, back-dated contract and a highly inflated income of around Rs 6.5 crore. He faced allegations of receiving payments from a steel firm which came to light recently after raids on it in 2010.
Singh said let law of the land prevail and challenged Jaitley and others in BJP "to approach appropriate law enforcement agencies if they want to prove something against me."
He said, "I am surprised and shocked by the news...about my income and my Income Tax (IT) returns. Some senior leaders of BJP and specially Arun Jaitley seems to know more than me about my IT returns and their information appears to be based on imaginary details supplied by BJP leadership in Delhi."
Clarifying his position on the Income Tax returns, Singh said, "I have filed my income tax return for the financial year 2011-12 which is true and factual and they are supported by vouchers and receipts. The record pertaining to income tax return will be shown to the appropriate authority as and when asked for.
"I am surprised how the personal information pertaining to my tax return, which are not even provided under RTI Act without the permission of the assesses, are being highlighted through the media during the peak of election campaign."
He said, "I am surprised that how Arun Jaitley acquired a private and personal document which is in safe custody of the competent authorities. As BJP is badly losing the assembly elections they are using these methods to mislead the people by putting up false, fabricated and fake allegations."
He said he did not wish to respond to "fiction based on theories circulated by the losing BJP".
"Repeated attempts are being made to scrutinise me on every front - I have no problem with it. I fail to understand how some senior BJP politicians have taken over the role of the Income Tax department, which has so far not sought any clarification from me," he said.
Denying the Ispat Industries pay-off allegations, he said, "I had demanded a CBI inquiry so that the truth can come out."
