MP disappointed; expected more cabinet berths

BHOPAL: The Jyotiraditya Scindia faction in Madhya Pradesh rejoiced with the elevation of the Gwalior royal scion to the more prestigious minister of state for energy (independent charge) portfolio. Though he was not yet a cabinet minister but to be offered independent charge of the energy ministry was reason to celebrate. Scindia supporters argued that the energy portfolio had previously been held by ministers of cabinet rank only. Hence, even as minister of state Scindia s responsibilities would be no less than that of a cabinet berth.

Speaking to the media, Jyotiraditya Scindia thanked the party high command for giving an opportunity to the youth. Asked about the boost in his stature, he said: I am grateful for this opportunity and hope to work to the best of my abilities and serve the nation.

But other than Scindia faction, the Madhya Pradesh Congress resembled a face of disappointment. With elections coming up next year in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, the Congress was hopeful of getting more berths in the Union cabinet which would send a positive message and increase the party s prospects in Mission 2013. The only other minister from the state and in the cabinet, Kamal Nath, was given the additional charge of Parliamentary affairs. He will continue to hold his primary urban development ministry.

But the reshuffle came as a disappointment to the newly elected young MPs from the state who considered themselves as an integral part of AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi s team the foremost among them is Meenakshi Natarajan, first-time MP from Mandsaur. Party was also expecting the return of Khandwa MP Arun Yadav, former minister of state for heavy industries, public enterprise, agriculture, youth affairs and sports who was dropped in the July 2011 reshuffle.

AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh, who was in Bhopal on Sunday to attend a Mahila Congress function, said: We are disappointed and had expected more berths for Madhya Pradesh but that should not be a deterrent. We will work very hard and with all our might for the upcoming assembly elections next year.

MPCC president Kantilal Bhuria under whose leadership the party has declared will contest the November 2013 elections said: Our party workers should not feel dejected or neglected because we already have two ministers in the Centre. Kamal Nath has been given one more portfolio and Jyotiraditya Scindia has been promoted to handle a prominent ministry independently. Congress leader of Opposition Ajay Singh added: The Cabinet formation is totally the Prime Minister s prerogative. He chooses his team.
