Modi telephoned Bihar BJP president Dr CP Thakur and invited him and other BJP leaders to his state for stumping.

PATNA: Finally Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has rushed to assuage the ruffled feelings of Bihar BJP leaders who were uneasy over being neglected by the top saffron party leader for not being included in the list of invitees to campaign in poll bound Gujarat.

On Sunday, Modi telephoned Bihar BJP president CP Thakur and invited him and other BJP leaders to his state for stumping. "All BJP leaders and workers are welcome to Gujarat for the election," Thakur said quoting Modi. The controversy arose when the Gujarat BJP election committee sent a list to the central election committee of the party but the list had not named a single party leader from Bihar.

Thakur, who had earlier expressed his unhappiness over the development, said that Modi told him that an unnecessary controversy had been created that he has barred Bihar BJP leaders. Even the central leadership had to intervene and said that Bihar BJP leaders would definitely campaign in Gujarat.

The controversy got momentum in the backdrop of the strained relations between Modi and his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar. It was also reasoned that since Bihar BJP leaders including deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi are closer to Nitish, Narendra Modi preferred to ignore them. This speculation was given further strengthen when Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray who in his mouthpiece 'Saamna' commented, "Narendra Modi's reported remarks about not allowing 'even a single Bihari babu' during assembly election campaign is aimed at his Bihar counterpart Nitish Kumar. During Bihar assembly elections, Nitish Kumar had prevented Modi from entering that state. He had also ordered removal of Modi's photo from JD(U)-BJP alliance posters."

The Bihar BJP leaders are elated over the Modi's call to Thakur. Party's national spokesman Shahnawaz Hussain said, "There is nothing like Bihar versus Gujarat in the BJP. We all work together to ensure victory of the party in elections anywhere in the country."

Meanwhile, the Janata Dal (United) has decided to field at least 30 candidates in Gujarat and launch a campaign headed by Nitish Kumar. Party general secretary KC Tyagi said, "JD(U) will shortly finalise the list of candidates after which the party will line up its senior leaders including national president Sharad Yadav, Nitish Kumar, state ministers and Parliamentarians." He said the theme of their campaign will be to showcase Bihar model of development to voters of Gujarat.

Bihar JD(U) president Vashist Narayan Singh said as per request sent by the party's Gujarat unit and after consulting the central leadership, ministers and others would be sent for campaign for the November-December assembly polls. He clarified that JD(U) has no alliance with BJP in Gujarat and during previous two elections, party contested thee separately.
