SM Krishna's re-entry into Karnataka state politics may not help Congress

Though it appears that AICC may not give any top post to Krishna in the KPCC, it may look at placing him as the campaign committee chairman.

BANGALORE: Former external affairs minister SM Krishna's return to Karnataka state politics after a gap of nine years may not result in a 360-degree change for the Congress which has failed to play the role of an effective opposition party.

Though it appears that AICC may not give any top post to Krishna in the KPCC, it may look at placing him as the campaign committee chairman. There are also talks of him being placed as a coordinator to bring unity in the party. But this move may also boomerang by creation of yet another group in the party.

Though his resignation to the Union cabinet is touted as return to state politics, there has been mixed reaction in the Congress circles on the move. While a section is rejoicing maintaining that he will strengthen the party ahead of assembly elections due next year, other leaders are wary about the age of Krishna who is 80 now.

In 1999, when he led the party to polls, there was an anti-incumbency wave against the Janata Parivar, which helped the Congress return to power. He is also blamed for bringing down the party from nearly 130 seats to little more than 60 in the subsequent elections in 2004. The magic was lost as his government gave more emphasis to urban development than rural areas. There is a large group within the Congress which is opposed to Krishna. With age against him, he can play the role of elderly statesman guiding the party under a collective leadership.

Soon after relinquishing governor's office in Maharashtra, a section of his loyalists had planned great welcome to him to state politics before the assembly elections in 2008. However, the party headed by Mallikarjun Kharge and AICC in charge of Karnataka affairs Prithviraj Chavan thwarted Krishna's plan.

Situation is totally different from what it was five years ago. KPCC president G Parameshwara is seen as Krishna's man and the former may bat for a prominent role for him in the party. According to Krishna, he would tour the state as an ordinary party worker without expecting a position.

A section in the party feels that Krishna's active role in state politics would dent BJP's prospects in Bangalore in the coming elections. The Bangalore urban district accounts for 28 assembly seats, highest in the state. At present, the ruling BJP is represented in 17 segments of the 28 and the party has won 110 of the total 198 wards in the BBMP. "Krishna has a charisma in Bangalore and Congress stands to benefit if he takes an active role in Bangalore and Mysore-Karnataka region. The BJP is anyway declining due to the alleged corruption cases against its top leaders," a senior Congress leader said.
