Telangana only after consensus: Congress

HYDERABAD: Dashing the hopes of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the Congress Friday said separate Telangana state can be carved out only after consensus over the issue.

Congress general secretary incharge of party affairs in Andhra Pradesh Ghulam Nabi Azad made it clear that it was not easy to find a solution to Telangana problem.

He told reporters that Andhra Pradesh can't be bifurcated like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

With this the Congress party has virtually rules out an early solution to Telangana problem.

TRS chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao, who recently held talks with Congress leaders in Delhi, had exuded confidence that a positive announcement on Telangana would be made by Dussehra.

"We are holding talks at various levels with all the leaders not just with Mr. Chandrasekhara Rao. We are having discussions with all stakeholders. The effort of the government of India is to arrive at consensus so that we can take everybody on board. This is a continuous process," he said.

Azad said the process of consultations was going on for last two years. "Leaders of Telangana, Andhra and Rayalaseema who are coming to Delhi are all giving their views on the issue," he added.

The TRS chief, who returned to Hyderabad early this month after several rounds of talks with Congress leaders in the national capital, had said the central government would make an announcement on Telangana by the month-end.

A section of Congress leaders from Telangana were also hopeful of an early solution.
