LUCKNOW: Congress president Sonia Gandhi had to face angry protests for the second consecutive day on Thursday during the two-day visit to her Lok Sabha constituency Rae Bareli. While on Wednesday, employees of government Industrial Training Institute (ITI) raised slogans against Sonia when she did not meet them, on Thursday in a similar situation the UPA chairperson had to face the resentment of women workers of defunct textile mills in the district.

The protests caught the Congress leaders by surprise because such things were rare in the Gandhi bastion of Rae Bareli and Amethi. So far, the protests, if any, were initiated by the Opposition party workers. However, the scene was different on Wednesday.

Scores of ITI workers and teachers waited for four hours at the main gate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), where Sonia was attending a function. They wanted to apprise her about their problems but she left from the back gate. When the ITI employees came to know about it, they took to streets and raised slogans against the Congress president.

While The ITI employees' union said that Congress will face the consequences in the next elections for their irresponsible attitude. Some women workers of a closed factory staged protest against Sonia alleging that she MP did not give any positive assurance when they met her. The Congress leaders, however, in defence said that their party president preferred not to commit anything on the closed textile mill because the matter is subjudice.

Sonia later attended a meeting of district vigilance and monitoring committee on the second day of her visit at the district collectorate. At the meeting, probe was ordered into the allegations that poor roads had been constructed under Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojna. The committee also approved Rs 400 crore for sewer and other works in the district. This was Sonia's second visit to the district in the last three months. Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka also visited Rae Bareli and Amethi on Thursday.

Visiting Amethi, Rahul's Lok Sabha constituency for the first time since Congress' defeat in the state assembly elections, Priyanka assured people that she would visit them regularly and keep in constant touch. Priyanka, who arrived here with her brother Rahul, attended a meeting at the Rajiv Gandhi charitable trust office in Jais with 150 women, who had recently got training in different trades like candle-making and chikan embroidery. After the meeting, Priyanka left for Rae Bareli to join her mother. Rahul later met party workers and asked them to forget the past and prepare for the Lok Sabha polls.
