NEW DELHI: The Congress core group on Tuesday reviewed the situation in the Capital in the wake of protests over the gang-rape incident emphasising that police should deal with the matter with sensitivity while there should be no room for violence.
The two-and-a-half hour long meeting at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's residence was attended by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, defence minister A K Antony, finance minister P Chidambaram and Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel. Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde and parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath were special invitees.
The meeting noted that there was calm in the streets of Delhi. Sources said the meeting was apprised of the fact that the government has requested the protesting student organisations and other groups to send their suggestions to the J S Verma Committee set up to rewrite the rape laws.
Sources said that the home minister gave a detailed briefing of the steps being taken by the government to enhance security in the city after the incident as well as the action taken so far in the gangrape case.
The meeting comes in the backdrop of BJP's demand for a special session of Parliament to discuss the gang rape issue.
Top sources in Congress, however, said that it was not discussed in the core group meeting.
BJP parliamentary party chief L K Advani led a seven- member delegation to President Pranab Mukherjee over the demand for a special session of Parliament.
Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj,however, said that she had received a call from Shinde just before the delegation met Mukherjee and that the "the home minister said he does not feel the need for a special session of Parliament or for calling an all-party meeting".
The Congress group meeting comes on a day when restrictions on traffic movement have been by and large lifted. A constable succumbed to his injuries sustained during Sunday's violent protests.
Constable Subhash Tomar (47), who was wounded during Sunday's protests, succumbed to his injuries at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and was cremated today in the presence of chief minister Shiela Dikshit, civil aviation minister Ajit Singh and others.
The meeting comes three days before an all party meeting on Telangana issue is scheduled on December 28. The sources, however, said that the issue did not came up in the core group meeting.
"It was a general review of the situation," party sources said but refused to go into the details of what transpired at the meeting.
