NAGPUR: Maharashtra home minister R R Patil Friday said that the government plans to recruit 63,000 policemen throughout the state in the next five years.

In response to a query during the question hour, Patil conceded that there has been a shortage of police personnel and that the proposal of recruiting 63,000 policemen will soon be discussed in the state cabinet.

He also said that 55,000 policemen were recruited in the last five years in the state at various levels to strengthen the force.

Speaking specifically about Nagpur city, Patil said that five new police stations have been proposed for Nagpur and land has been sought from the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) and the civic body for setting them up.

He assured that if there is delay in allotment of plots for the proposed police stations in the city, the government will rent properties till appropriate plots of land are allotted for the same.

Several opposition members, however, criticised the government for not doing enough to bring down the increasing crimes against women including chain-snatching, which has become a major problem in the city.

Earlier during the question hour, the house was adjourned twice as the opposition took on the government for crop losses due to scanty rainfall. The opposition also criticised the absence of Rehabilitation Minister Patangrao Kadam and Minister of State for Revenue Prakash Solanki, from whom the opposition sought answers related to crop losses.
