BJP minister counters Bhagwat's marriage contract statement

BHOPAL: Senior cabinet minister in the Madhya Pradesh BJP government and former chief minister Babulal Gaur sharply reacted to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's statement on marriage being a "social contract between husband and wife". The octogenarian minister for urban development said Bhagwat's observation is not appropriate in the Indian context where husbands have been for centuries considered "parmeshwar (god)" by wives.

Babulal Gaur is the seniormost legislator in the state having won Bhopal's Govindpura assembly seat nine times in a row. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Gaur openly disagrees with the RSS chief's statement in Indore that "marriages are based on the theory of social contracts." Addressing a rally, Bhagwat had said that a husband and wife just live together under a social agreement.

"Then why just one contract and not two or three contracts?" asked minister for urban administration and development Babulal Gaur. "Marriage being an agreement of a social contract is a foreign concept to India. Traditionally in this country, a woman considered her husband as a god. That status may have changed in the modern era but what is good in our society should be kept that way. In India, a woman gets married to a man thinking it to be a life-long commitment. Not just that, marriages in India are considered a bond that goes beyond one life. We call it 'saat jannmo ka bandhan (an attachment for seven lives)'," he explained.
