Delhi gang-rape victim's family slams Asaram; a case filed against godman in Lucknow

LUCKNOW: Even as the family of 23- year-old Delhi gang-rape victim has taken a strong exception to Asaram Bapu's statement on the girl, terming it as illogical, an application was moved by an advocate in the court of chief judicial magistrate, Lucknow, on Tuesday for registration of FIR against the controversial godman, who on Monday had said that rape and murder would not have happened if the victim had called the rapist killers brothers and fallen on their feet.

Reacting to it, victim's family members told media-persons that Asaram's statement was 'highly deplorable' and 'absolutely illogical'. They said that they never expected such a remark from him. Godman or saints can never say anything of this sort and Asaram now stands exposed, they added. The family at present in its native village in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh for rituals performed after death as per the Hindu tradition. The victim had died on December 29.

In Lucknow, one Madan Lal Shukla, a resident of Ambedkarnagar, moved an application before CJM Rajesh Upadhayay under section 156 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code which allows magistrate to order probe and register FIR. The applicant in his complaint has stated that remark made by Asaram, which was published in newspapers and telecast on news channels, amounted to offense under section 509 of the Indian Penal Code as it was against the victim as well as entire women community. The court has asked the police as to whether any FIR has already been registered or not in the case so far. Section 509 of the IPC makes word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman as a cognizable offense with maximum one year imprisonment.
