Punjab finance minister Parminder Dhindsa represented the state government at the state level commemoration the first time after the demise of Satguru Jagjit Singh leading to controversy over the control of the Namdhari sect. Last year too both the Badals had missed out as they were busy in the state assembly elections, those were held on January 30. Namdhari Sikhs better known as Kukas had contributed significantly in India's freedom struggle. The English forces had blown off 66 Kukas by canons at Malerkotla on January 17, 1872. Namdhari Sikh HS Hanspal from the sect had rose on to become MP in the past.
Namdhari Sikhs under sect head Satguru Ram Singh though had started movement against the English in 1857 and got the status of freedom fighters only in December 2008 after more than 150 years, when union government allowed descendants the benefits under Sainik swatantar Samman pension scheme and only recently Punjab government has formed a committee to identify the beneficiaries of the martyrs. It could be possible after historian Malwinderjit Singh Warraich had filed a petition in Punjab and Haryana high court for granting Kuka and Jallianwala Bagh martyrs the status of freedom fighters.
Finance minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa said "CM PS Badal, Sukhbir Badal, MP SS Dhindsa were to reach to pay regards but failed as they were occupied somewhere else". He said SAD-BJP government accords full recognition to Namdhari martyrs and will go out to provide assistance to descendants.
He asked the people to draw inspiration from the unparalleled sacrifice of Kuka Martyrs who were blown off in front of canons by the British rulers on this historic day in 1872. PWD minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon was also present. As people were suspecting trouble because of factionalism among factions of Namdharis but the day passed off peacefully.
