Shettar is the only Lingayat leader in Karnataka, not Yeddyurappa: DV Sadananda Gowda

BANGALORE: Former chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda took a gibe at his predecessor and Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) supremo BS Yeddyurappa, saying BJP has given "the so-called face of Lingayats" a befetting answer by projecting Jagadish Shettar as chief ministerial candidate of the BJP.

"Those who were claiming as the only Lingayat leader of the state should now know that he is no more the leader. Instead Shettar is face of the community and the BJP has done justice to north Karnataka by projecting the CM as the party's leade," Gowda taunted Yeddyurappa while speaking to reporters in Legislators' House (LH) on Monday.

Continuing to attack the former CM, Gowda said the regional parties will never succeeded in the state and KJP will also meet same fate as other regional political parties. "People will teach lesson, if anyone is hoping that they would sweep north Karnataka in coming polls with their regional parties," he said.

Yeddyurappa in Chikmagalur again expressed doubts that Shettar would present the budget.

He also hit out at Congress padayatra (walkathon), saying the ongoing election canvassing by Congress is nothing but eye wash.

Water resources minister Basavaraj Bommai also took on Congress for embarking on Padayatra demanding speedy implementation of B scheme to utilise state's share of Krishna river water and termed it as an election gimmick.

"Congress leaders are walking to keep up their health in good condition. Our government has already started six out of nine projects under the B scheme. The works on Mulawad, Mallabad, Chimmalagi, Gutti Basavanna, Ramathal and Koppal lift irrigation projects have already started. Soon tenders will be called for Herekal lift irrigation project," the minister said.

Bommai also pointed out that the modernization of distributory system of Visvesvaraya Canal of KRS reservoir at a cost of Rs 330 crore has been taken up. "We are planning to complete the work in six months," he added.
