BANGALORE: BJP troubleshooter ArunJaitley will have to juggle caste and region equation while choosing new president to state BJP unit on Saturday.
With incumbent KS Eshwarappa resigning on Thursday, the post is up for grabs and quite a few leaders have thrown their hat into the ring. Saturday's core committee meeting involving senior leaders is expected to finalize the name.
The BJP central leaders appears to be favouring for north-south and Lingayat-Vokkaliga combination. While chief minister Jagadish Shettar is Lingayat from north Karnataka, the party is looking at a Vokkaliga leader from south. Just like Lingayat factor helped Shettar to become CM after dethroning Gowda, Vokkaliga and south factors may come in handy for Ashoka as the BJP wants to try Lingayat-Vokkaliga combination in the coming election. Other hot contenders are MPs Nalin Kumar Katil, Prahalad Joshi and minister Govind M Karjol.
However, it is no free way for Ashoka even as top BJP leaders like Dharmendra Pradhan is said to have supporting his candidature. The RSS reportedly is backing Katil, a bunt or Joshi, Brahmin for the post. When the news reached him fortnight ago during budget session that he too was considered for president's post, Ashoka was reluctant to digest fearing the blame he had to take in case BJP bites dust in the coming assembly polls. "I am not aspirant for the post, but will respect party leadership's verdict," Ashoka and Joshi said indicating they are ready to accept the responsibility.
Ashoka is said to have given nod to accept the responsibility in case his name is mooted for the fact that he can remain in the post of next three-years. When asked that the deputy CM may also have the option of becoming president even after the elections, his close circle maintain that competition would be more after the polls. "In case of BJP not coming to power on its own or through coalition set up, even chief minister Jagadish Shettar might throw his hat into the ring. With Gowda on other side, competition becomes tough," he said.
Close sources to Eshwarappa said the deputy chief minister's quitting was not a surprise. "He had decided to quit on Feb 21 itself. He had planned to quit ministry and hold back president's post, but decided against it as three-year tenure had completed as chief of the party," he said.
Besides issues like change of guard, core committee is likely to discuss list of 150 candidates finalized by the party for coming assembly polls. After being cleared by the new president and election committee, the list would go before BJP parliamentary board before announcement. Like last assembly elections, Jaitley has been appointed as election incharge of the state unit.
