CAG report is not Bible: Andhra CM Kiran Reddy

HYDERABAD: After hitting headlines for his sweeping remarks in the Assembly, chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Monday turned his ire towards CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) and informed the House that its findings were always not true, and said, "It is not Bhagavdgeetha, Quran or the Bible."

The CM's remark that stunned the members came when he intervened in a short discussion on power crisis prevailing in the state.

As he initiated the discussion, TDP member Payyavula Keshav said the CAG had pointed out that the APGENCO (AP Power Generation Corporation) was charging higher price for power than any other project. And this prompted the CM shot back to say CAG was not infallible.

"The CAG findings would not always be right. It is not Bhagavdgitha, Quran or Bible. We are referring the CAG findings to the PAC (Public Accounts Committee), and it would give us the report. If need arises, we may refer to any public undertaking to verify the findings," said Kiran Reddy.

While this enraged the opposition members, Keshav said, "It is not proper to belittle a statutory body like CAG. Being in the position of chief minister, Kiran Kumar Reddy should have not made such remarks. Apart from demeaning a constitutional authority, such statements would make people losing trust in the system."

An assuaged CM clarified he did not mean to belittle CAG. "I am not blaming CAG, denying the concerns of the opposition members either. All that I appeal is analyze before criticizing the government. I admit that the power situation in the state is dismal. Come up with constructive suggestions instead of just being critical," Kiran Reddy said.
