NEW DELHI: A crude low intensity explosion outside President Pranab Mukherjee's hotel in Dhaka set off alarm bells within the Indian security establishment on Monday.
Police officials said that a crude homemade explosive was thrown near Sonargaon Pan Pacific hotel around 2 pm about 20 minutes after the President's cavalcade passed from the route. This comes at the back of a two-day strike called by the fundamentalist Jamait-e-Islami.
The President was inside the hotel at the time. Rashtrapati Bhawan spokesperson said that President's engagements continued as scheduled. In a statement the President's press secretary said that no one in the delegation heard or knew of the explosion and life continued as normal in and around the hotel. Tejgaon DCP Chowdhury Monzurul Kafir said," The explosion was caused by a cracker. It is usually done to reinforce the bandh and there is no need to worry."
The Rashtrapati Bhawan statement issued in the afternoon added, "Bangladesh authorities have informed that about an hour back a crude cocktail was found and they are investigating into the matter. Indian security officials have expressed the view that this was a minor explosion. Bursting of such cocktails are common in Bangladesh during hartals and cannot be described as a bomb."
Indian officials said that while there was concern about the arrangements made to sanitize the President's route, the reports of a "bomb" were exaggerated. The President addressed 10,000 students in an open air pandal in the Dhaka University on Monday and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the President of Bangladesh who is also Chancellor of the University at the function.
