MUMBAI: Governments, business and civil society all have a role to play in coming up with answers for a cleaner, greener world, said UN secretary general Ban-Ki Moon as the world observed Earth Hour, a coordinated effort to fight climate change through sustainable energy use.
The UN plans to turn off lights at its headquarters in New York like many other initiatives across the globe.
"We participate with an undimmed determination to take action on climate change," said Ban, who has been urging the UN to "lead by example" in reducing its carbon footprint.
The Earth Hour was in 2012 observed by more than 7,000 cities and towns in 152 countries by switching off their lights to show support for action on climate change and sustainable living.
Earth Hour was launched in 2007 in Australia by the World Wildlife Federation (WWF), the global conservation organization, which calls for people, organizations and cities to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour starting at 8:30 p.m. local time.
