EC transfers 12 deputy commissioners in poll-bound Karnataka

BANGALORE: With hours after replacing 12 deputy commissioners (DC), the chief electoral officer (CEO) Anil Kumar Jha has directed chief secretary SV Ranganath to stop identifying new beneficiaries under social security schemes.

"Besides, the Election Commission has asked the government not to implement granting lands to individuals and institutions," Jha told reporters here on Sunday. Issuance of new rations cards has already been stopped.

The CEO office has also sent 4-page dos and don'ts' to chief secretary to be circulated to all the secretaries and departmental heads till elections are completed.

The voter enrolment drive of the commission appears to be paying results with 4 lakh new applications being flooded to various election offices in the state. "We have approved nearly 2.20 lakh applications and rest is in the process. Soon a drive to enthuse voters to exercise their franchise will start," Jha said.

Justifying the replacing 12 DCs, the CEO said the state was going for polls in single phase and the commission needed best of the officers who could act and react to quickly. The government on Wednesday issued orders posting new DCs to 12 districts. Jha hinted that IPS officers at SP level may also be reshuffled soon.
