"Culprits have been arrested," deputy inspector general (DIG) DK Arya told TOI. Six peeople were involved in the crime, five arrested, he said.
Those arrested were identified as Kanjar Baba (20), Bhutha (25), Rampro (25), Gaza alias Brijesh (25) and Vishnu (25) — all residents of Kanjar Tola settlement in Jharia village. Efforts were on to arrest the sixth accused Nitin Kumar (24). None of them have criminal records, said police.
Police said Kanjar Tola settlement is located — 2km from the spot where the victim was raped and 8 km from the district headquarters.
The 39-year-old Swiss woman, on a cycling trip along with her companion, was gang raped at a forest area near Sewda road in Datia district on Friday night. The couple — on adventure tourism in India — decided to camp at a forest area for the night while on their way back from Orchha (temple city), and were proceeding to Agra.
Over two dozen villagers' in the surrounding villages were grilled. "We got some leads from the villagers. During search at some of the villages with specific inputs, we found that these youths missing from their settlements. Intensive search was carried out in the forest area and the accused were arrested," said the DIG.
During interrogation the accused said told police that, they reached the camp spotting its light. "The couple was sleeping when they reached. They overpowered the man and raped his wife," said the DIG quoting excerpts from the accused's statement. He said five of them raped the woman taking turns. Accused Brijesh did not commit the rape, he said. The accused had dumped their belongings in the jungle before shifting to different hideouts.
All five have been arrested under sections 376 2 (gang rape), 395 (dacoity), 323 (assault) and 11/13 Madhya Pradesh Anti-Dacoity Act by the Civil Lines police station. Police have also recovered a fire from their possession.
Meanwhile, Swiss couple has left for New Delhi for further treatment. DIG Arya said that their statements have been recorded. "They will have to come again for identification of the accused," he said.
Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Uma Shankar Gupta told media that the incident was "unfortunate" but also claimed that foreign tourists had been ignoring legal formalities of intimating the police stations about their movements in the area.
