AMRITSAR: Four Indians are striving hard to live on an abandoned Panama flagged vessel MV Neem after being marooned by the owner.The vessel has 25 crew members including 19 Pakistani, 1 Egyptian and Bangladeshi each besides 4 Indians.
While talking to TOI over phone from Karachi, Pakistan's former Federal Minister for Human Rights Ansar Burney said that the ship was presently stuck in Naqala in Mozambique which was about 2500 kilometer away from capital Maputo .
"The shipping company has stopped food and other life saving supplies on the Vessel and have not been paying them their salaries" said Burney quoting his sources while adding that even the owner of the Vessel had given life threats to the crew members. He said it was not clear as to why the ship had been abandoned with crew on board.
Vice Chairman of Ansar Burney International Trust Fahad Burney said he was leaving for Mozambique to rescue the hapless crew of the Vessel. He informed that he had taken up the issue with Pak Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan High Commissions at South Africa and Kenya who had been helpful in Trust's rescue efforts. He informed that according to their reports the condition of crew was very critical as an engineer Ghulam Hussain had died on the ship on Friday and now his body was lying in Naqala General Hospital in Mozambique.
He said that Trust was making efforts to bring back his body to Pakistan. He said through Trust's network in Mozambique they were trying to make necessary arrangements for provision of food and other basic amenities to the occupants of Vessel. "They don't even have clean water due to engine failure and there is no electricity on the ship which is inside of Nacala Port in Mozambique " said Fahad.
