NEW DELHI: Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Yasin Malik, who returned here on Saturday after his controversial visit to Pakistan, was allowed to leave for Srinagar on Sunday morning without any formal "questioning" by the authorities here. Apart from his brief interaction with intelligence officials manning the immigration counter at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, he was spared a detailed explanation to the agencies during his brief stay here, on his appearance along side 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed at a protest in Islamabad last month.
Home ministry sources, however, said the ministry was yet to take a call on revoking his passport for having shared the dais with the Lashker-e-Taiba boss during a fast to protest the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. According to an official, his passport is unlikely to be reissuedafter the validity of the current passport expires on March 19. Agencies are contemplating blocking his passport for a year or two to send a strong message to Kashmiri separatists who hobnob with terrorists and fugitives during their visits abroad.
Incidentally, Malik's detention or arrest was never on the cards after his arrival here, with the security agencies of the view that it would only help him play the victim. Moreover, they felt that being too harsh on the JKLF leader when Kashmir was still tense over the hanging of Guru as well as the recent killing of a youth in Baramulla, would only aggravate problems in the Valley.
Sources said Malik has, however, been advised to lie low and not make any intemperate remarks or statement that could fan tempers in Kashmir.
