A toss-up between Prakash Mishra and Sharad Kumar for new NIA chief

NEW DELHI: Government has shortlisted names of two senior IPS officers -- Odisha police chief Prakash Mishra and Haryana police director general (prison) Sharad Kumar - to be selected as head of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Though Mishra (1977 batch officer) is two-batch senior to Kumar, the odd appears to be in favour of the latter as the Odisha police chief is learnt to have expressed his reluctance to head the central anti-terror probe agency.

While Mishra earlier served in the NIA as its additional DG, Kumar had handled the Samjhauta Express train blast probe before the case was handed over to the central agency which later found the terror incident to be the handiwork of Hindu radicals.

Without ruling out the possibility of considering couple of more names as contenders, sources in the home ministry said that the final decision on new NIA chief would be taken soon.

Meanwhile, the ministry has given senior IPS officer N R Wasan the charge of director general of the agency after the incumbent S C Sinha moved to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) as a member. Wasan will officiate as the agency's DG till the government appoints a full-fledged chief of the NIA.

Wasan, a 1980 batch Andhra Pradesh cadre officer, is presently serving as additional DG in the NIA which was set up under a Parliament Act in the wake of the 26\11 Mumbai terror attack case of November, 2008. The agency was set up with a mandate to probe any terror-related case in the country.

Sinha, Haryana cadre IPS officer, was the second DG of the NIA. He had held the post for over two years before moving to the NHRC. Government had appointed him as the Commission's member last week despite strong opposition from the BJP which is against appointment of retired bureaucrats or senior police officers to the human rights body.
