MUMBAI: The ruling Congress and NCP leader are back to square one. Immediately after the Sangli-Miraz-Kupwad civic polls, the Congress launched veiled attack on its alliance partner NCP.

"To keep the Congress at bay some political parties buried their difference and formed an alliance. Such tricks were tried in several other local elections in past. But citizens Sangli poll results are clear indications that people of Maharashtra have rejected such strategic alliance made by political parties to defeat Congress," Manikrao Thakre, state Congress president said. Thakre made this statement while addressing the media in Mumbai on Monday.

Of the 76 seats, the Congress bagged 40 while NCP managed to retain merely 18 seats. Despite having alliance in the state and Central government, the Congress and the NCP contested against each other in the Sangli local polls. The voting for the election was held on Sunday and results were announced late Monday afternoon.
