Efforts gain momentum to bring back Yeddyurappa to BJP fold

BANGALORE: Ahead of a crucial meeting of Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) on Thursday to elicit opinion on whether should it merge with the BJP, a section of BJP leaders led by former chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda are in New Delhi in an effort to bring back former CM and KJP supremo B S Yeddyurappa.

Even as in-charge of party affairs in Karnataka Thavarchand Ghelot maintained that Yeddyurappa has to make the first move in order to get into the party, the former CM has convened a meeting of KJP volunteers to know the pulse of the party workers on merging with the BJP.

Meanwhile, Gowda group met all the top central leaders of the BJP in New Delhi urging them to clarify on the Yeddyurappa issue. BJP president Rajnath Singh is said to have asked the state leaders to remain silent and not to make any public statement on the matter.

"The matter is still in discussion stage. Nothing concrete has taken place. The matter will be discussed at a central level at appropriate time. So the leaders have asked us remain silent on the issue," sources said.

He said the delegation had apprised Rajnath Singh and Arun Jaitley the need to get Yeddyurappa, but were yet to convince BJP patriarch L K Advani and senior leader Sushma Swaraj.

Besides asking Yeddyurappa to apply first, the BJP has put condition that the KJP leader was acceptable, but his supporters like Shobha Karadlaje, C M Udasi, M P Renukacharya, M D Lakshminarayana, B P Harish, Nehru Olekar, V Dhananjay Kumar among others were not welcome.

However, the party is not averse to the five other MLAs from the KJP to join BJP. In the case of KJP's merger, the BJP will get the status of opposition party as the strength will increase from 40 to 46. The leaders batting for Yeddyurappa in Delhi have emphasized this theory and also the benefits for the party during 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Party leaders H N Ananth Kumar, K S Eshwarappa, R Ashoka, Prahalad Joshi are against the move to bring back Yeddyurappa. Former CMs Jagadish Shettar and Gowda are neutral and are seeking clarity on the issue.

The anti-Yeddyurappa camp is resisting the move as they maintain that in the first place none of the leaders asked the KJP supremo to quit the party and claims his re-entry is not to strengthen the party but for his personal gain and for better political future of his son-MP B Y Raghavendra, who is MP from Shimoga. Though recognized in KJP, Raghavendra has not yet resigned from BJP.
