SC raps govt on acid attacks, says regulate sale

MUMBAI: In a welcome move, the Supreme Court today cracked down on the government for failing to regulate the sale of acid in the open market.

A brutal form of violence against women, acid attacks has been long ignored in India's criminal justice system. It was as recent as March that the crime received legal recognition by way of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2013 which was passed by the Parliament. It mandated that acid attacks could attract a jail term of minimum 10 years which could be extended to life.

Hitting out at the government for its 'lack of seriousness' in framing a policy to control the sale of acids the apex court granted a week's time for action.

We could draw lessons from Bangladesh which regulated the sale of acid in the open market since 2002, significantly bringing down the prevalence of the crime. It also imposed a hefty fine of upto Rs 10 lakh takas on offenders.

There have been several committees and bodies that have highlighted the need for acid violence to be treated with seriousness. It is time the government shook of its apathy and worked to both prevent the crime as well as alleviate the suffering of victims.
