Soon after the cops received information about a man making such claims after being caught by some residents of Morpa Village, Raipur District, senior officials were virtually on their toes, perhaps hoping to crack the case much before the National Investigating Agency (NIA), However, their hopes were shattered when they realised that the man was just a petty thief and nothing more.
The entire drama started at around 11.30 PM in Morpa when the suspect, later identified as Laykan , a resident of Hirmapara, Darbha District, was caught by some villagers when he was trying to enter a house along with two of his associates. Cornered by the irate villagers, Laykan threatened them with dire consequences by claiming that he as VC Shukla and Mahendra Karma''s killer' and a Maoist.
His claims did strike some fear among the villagers, who were on a verge of thrashing him. However, someone from the crowd suggested that he should be taken to the nearby Suhela police station. Having drawn a lot of flak for the May 25 massacre, the cops at the station were not willing to take any chances and the information about the self styled Maoist killer's arrest was flashed to the senior officials too.
However, during interrogation it was revealed that Laykan was just a petty thief who had made the tall claims to save himself from a thrashing. Though he did succeed in it, his claims surely put the cops on tenterhooks for sometime.
When contacted IG, Raipur range, GP Singh, confirmed the incident and said that the suspect had fabricated the story to save himself. He said Laykan had been booked and the police were on the lookout for his associates who managed to escape.
