South Gujarat region staring at green drought

SURAT: The region of south Gujarat is staring at more than 100 per cent excess rainfall situation this monsoon . With the season not even half way through, more than 60 per cent of the annual normal rainfall is already been recorded in majority of the talukas of the region.

"In some places like Valsad, Pardi, have already reached the 100 per cent of the average annual rainfall and we are staring at green drought this year, if the rains continue this year. " said Kanji Patel, a cane sugar farmer from Navsari district.

Dr Neeraj Kumar, of meteorological department of Navsari Agriculture University (NAU) said, " This year due to favorable pressure system created the winds and clouds are travelling from Sea to land and it will continue to bring very good rains in the region. We are staring at hugely excess monsoon."

Talukas in Surat district have already recorded more than 200-300 per cent of excess rains that what was recorded last year and as a result ground water situation in interior parts of the district is likely to show a marked improvement.

"Lots of water is sinking in the land at present and if the monsoon continues to be like this for another month we would have lot of water stored in for future purpose." Said Rajesh Desai a farmer from Mangrol and added, "unlike past three years small dams will also be full and interior parts of the region too won't suffer from water crisis next summer."
