Telegram service goes into history pages

AMRITSAR: As the dawn of Indian telegram service approached on Sunday, a few enthusiasts of this colonial legacy ,which is now being redundant after 160 years, had specially reached the telegram department of post office to send messages to dear ones by telegram to record their name on the pages of history.

And it was also an emotional day for the telegraphists and cycle borne telegram messengers seeing the end of a service which is marred by technological revolution. Resident of holy city Ravinder Singh had come to telegram department on Sunday accompanying with his young son both to send telegram to his wife and show his son the once most reliable and prompt method of message transfer in the country before it goes to oblivion.

"Telegrams used to be the only system of message transfers in my young days and I have brought my son to show him the telegram service "said he while talking to TOI on Sunday adding that he had sent a telegram to his wife and one to Prime Minister of India. "In my telegram to Prime Minister I have thanked the nation for the tremendous service" he said but he didn't divulge the message he had sent to his wife and ended conversation with a big smile on his face. But for Telegram Messenger Tarlok Singh it was an emotional day when he would stop delivering messages by hand. "It was a myth that telegrams only spread scarce among recipients but we deliver messages of both grief and happiness" said he.

Taking pride in being the Telegram Messenger he said "This department has given me my identity, I have raised my family, taken care of my elderly parents and now it is being closed, I am so much attached to it" he said. Tarlok has also penned down a poem in memory of closure of the service which goes by "Bas yad hi reh jaygee, telegram nahi ayegee, tar kae naam sae har koi bara gabrata tha, bas yad hi reh jaygee". Telegraphist in the department Manmohan Sehgal said that he had joined as telegraphist in 1975 and in 37 years of his service he had sent lakhs of messages . "But we have to cope up with rapid growth of telecom industry to be at par with international standards" said he.
