In 2006, Zakia made accusations against Modi and 62 others that they had conspired to spread the communal violence post-Godhra instead of curbing it. When Gujarat police did not take her complaint, she moved courts. The SC finally asked SIT to probe the allegations, and SIT came up with a closure report stating that no offence was made out against Modi.
Zakia has filed a protest petition against this clean chit. SIT has argued against this petition by stating that the complaint was made at a belated stage. SIT also claimed that no concrete evidence was found to implicate Modi and others, and dubbed Zakia's key witness in suspended IPS Sanjiv Bhatt as unreliable.
Zakia's lawyers have been replying to the SIT's findings for more than past one month. Besides terming SIT as one of the conspirators in shielding the accused, Zakia's lawyers have highlighted how SIT has deliberately not probed the case seriously.
Citing various examples, Zakia's lawyers have brought to the court's notice that the investigators never tried to crosscheck claims made by any witness, particularly when he implicates Modi. But on the other hand, SIT tried its level best to prove Bhatt wrong.
