Despite the disapproval of some BJP leaders, Ashoka forged an alliance with JD(S) and also campaigned with Anitha Kumaraswamy in Bangalore South and Rajarajeshwarinagar assembly segments.
The BJP had filed the nomination, but withdrew later in favour of JD(S). In reciprocation, the JD(S) did not field anyone for the upper house bypolls from Mysore.
As the alliance was not formalized, none of the BJP leaders barring Ashoka canvassed for JD(S). State BJP president Prahalad Joshi said the JD(S) never extended any formal invitation to the party for canvassing.
BJP's decision to not field any candidates is expected to have bearing on the party. The party, which won Bangalore South assembly segment, is expected to lose some base. It also faces the possibility of an erosion of votes in Rajarajeshwarinagar. While Bangalore South gave the Congress a lead of over 24,313 votes, Rajarajeshwarinagar gave a lead of over 5,000 votes.
It will be difficult for the JD(S) to recoup from the debacle as these two constituencies were its strongholds. The Vokkaligas here have backed former PM HD Deve Gowda's family in all situations and the defeat now portends signs that their hold over the community is slipping away.
Commenting on the results, Prahlad Joshi said the alliance between BJP and JD(S) was a non-starter as the JD(S) leadership did not have clarity on it. "The voice of dissent emanating from JD(S) confused the voters too. We strongly believe clear understanding on joint campaign and involvement of BJP cadres would have made a difference to the result."
"This victory will not have any bearing on the 2014 Lok Sabha polls which will be faced on various failures of UPA government," he maintained.
