A senior paediatrician from the city, Dr Bodhankar is the first Indian to get this rare honour and an opportunity to head the prestigious organization with 54 member countries, for three years.
Speaking to TOI, Dr Bodhankar said he would work towards improving the quality of life of people living with diseases and disabilities. He would also strive to make healthcare more affordable for common man. "It is a good opportunity also to rope in international expertise for member countries and create trained manpower in health education and research," he said.
To begin with he is appealing to authorities to make Nagpur a 'disability friendly' city. "It is sad that I have been trying for this for a long time since I was COMHAD secretary general. But except for promises by most local and regional leaders and civic authorities I have not got any concrete response so far," he said.
COMHAD is an NGO and is supported by the Commonwealth Foundation in London. It works with support from the World Health Organization and gets technical support in various areas like mental health, disability prevention, maternal and child health and reproductive health.
Mother and child health is one of the priorities of COMHAD in developing Commonwealth countries. Other fields where COMHAD extensively works include childhood blindness, epilepsy prevention and a programme with WHO on early childhood psycho-social development.
