Swaminathan, a former Rajya Sabha MP, also said the concerns expressed by Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa on the bill are genuine but many amendments have been suggested to the original bill and it is to see whether the final bill addresses all the issues.
"Calorie deprivation can be overcome by the Food Security Bill...The Bill will make a major contribution in the area of food security," Swaminathan told reporters here.
The Bill would also ensure that all people get access to food grains. Besides, it would also addresses the issues of inadequate consumption, he said.
Swaminathan said in fact, a food security legislation by BJP-ruled Chhattisgarh government has "gone a step ahead," by addressing the issue of protein deficiency, Swaminathan said.
On the concerns expressed by Jayalalithaa such as risk of decreased rice allocation to the state and lack of proper coverage of beneficiaries, he said such concerns are genuine but many amendments have been suggested to the original bill.
"Let's see if the final bill addresses these concerns," he said.
Jayalalithaa had suggested to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that a few provisions be inserted in the Food Bill to address her government's concerns.
