VHP international general secretary Champat Rai told reporters that many seers from the states -- Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka could not take part in the 84-kosi yatra due to heavy monsoon rains. "The VHP is organizing 5-kosi yatra for the seers of the four southern states. One prominent seer of each state along with 100 supporters will take part in the yatra", he said.
The move is being seen as Sangh Parivar's attempt to push forward Hindutava agenda in the run up to Lok Sabha elections due next year. It has also coincided with anointment of Narendra Modi as prime ministerial candidate of the BJP, akin of the RSS. The state is already witnessing one of the worst ever communal riots, which so far have claimed over 45 lives in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining districts.
Though the state government had banned 84-kosi yatra and deployed heavy security forces which foiled VHP's yatra scheduled from August 25 to September 13, the VHP leader claimed that it was a success. He said that despite hurdles created by the government and large scale arrest of VHP activists, the yatra continued uninterrupted and concluded with proper rituals at Makhoda in Basti district.
The 84-kosi yatra covered around 400km passing through six districts - Basti, Faizabad, Gonda, Ambedkarnagar, Barabanki and Bahraich. However, UP government banned it saying it may spoil communal atmosphere. In fact, many seers described yatra as political and against tradition saying that such yatras are performed in the month Chaitra of Hindu calendar, which this year was in April.
