27 fishermen from Tamil Nadu arrested in Qatar

CHENNAI: As many as 30 fishermen, including 27 from Tamil Nadu, were arrested by authorities in Qatar for straying into their waters. They were arrested from Ajman in the UAE on September 30.

P Sasikumar, deputy chief of mission at the Indian embassy in Doha, told TOI over phone on Monday that negotiations were on with the Qatari officials for their early release since the entire Gulf, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, will have a 12-day holiday for Eid-al-Adha which begins next week.

Last month, Iran released 19 Indian fishermen, including 16 from Tamil Nadu, who were arrested and jailed in December last year for straying into Iranian waters.
