Met department said that the state capital, south Bastar and few other southern parts of Chhattisgarh would be worst affected with Phailin. "The state would start experiencing light drizzle with light and cold winds from Saturday morning or Friday midnight. If the storm hits northern parts of Chhattisgarh, southern parts would be badly affected with heavy to very heavy rainfall. About 120-170 mm of rainfall could be expected in several parts of state," Gopal Rao, weather scientist told TOI.
Talking to TOI, N S Mehta, assistant meteorologist, state weather department, said, "the severe cyclonic storm from east Bay of Bengal is moving with a speed of 210-220 km per hour with gusting winds and could go up to 235 km per hour. While the pressure moves towards Gopalpur in Orissa south east parts, it will affect the low lying areas with very heavy storm, very heavy rainfall and thunder activity."
He said that on Saturday and Sunday the storm would drench Raipur, South Bastar and other south west sectors of the state with very heavy rainfall. Mehta said that Phailin which is equivalent to five hurricanes and capable of catastrophic damage will lead to loss of large number of crops in state.
"Deep depression is expected after 13 which would slow down the affect but it's hard to exactly identify the locations to get affected. This usually happens in monsoon in the southern parts of country but this year it's hitting harder and going towards Orissa from Andhra Pradesh which could further head towards Northern parts of the country.
The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast a risk to life and extensive damage to property when it makes landfall in 36 hours, said a release from Indian Meteorological Department.
