The participants are not aspirants of any position in the party, but are volunteers whose objective is to support the saffron party gain power.
The Friends of BJP, supported by the party and its leadership, held their meeting last Sunday to chalk-out strategies for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. During the meeting, they pledged to dedicate their weekends till the next general elections towards 'Mission 272+' to work for getting majority for the BJP.
"I have my own start-up company. Two months prior to the election, I will engage myself 24x7 for Modi,'' said P S Raghu.
The volunteer network has chalked out three-pronged strategy to reach out to the masses, especially in rural areas, where the BJP's presence is limited. Door-to-door campaigning, social media and enrolling and influencing new voters are the programmes chalked out. As the volunteers are working professionals, the campaigning is done during weekends. Leaflets describing the ideology of the BJP, governance model of Modi and the 100-plus alleged scams during the UPA regime are distributed.
"The network is to ensure the involvement of the rising middle class in the political process. We actively use technology to connect and grow. We create groups and they work in designated areas. In Karnataka, the network is growing rapidly," said Amit Malviya, national co-convener of Friends of BJP.
Won't they have to answer uncomfortable questions like the Gujarat riots and the polarizing personality of Modi? "Of course, we answer all questions raised by the citizens. Post-2002, not a single incident of communal violence has happened in Gujarat. Can there be a better example for his leadership qualities? During our campaigning, we try to quell the misconceptions surround Modi,'' said Channamallikarjun Patil, state convener of BJP's Communication Cell.
