RAIPUR: Leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, on Friday accused the Congress-led government of soft-peddling with extremism and insurgency and claimed that the growing Naxalite and jihadi problems in the country were due to a lack of a clear policy.

"The Union government has no clear policy on dealing with Maoists and jeihadis," he said. He also accused a section of the Congress leadership of being hand-in-glove with the Maoists, thus being an impediment in dealing with the problem.

"Congress leaders have either prevented direct action against them or compromised politically to their cause by issuing statements in their interest," he said while referring to Sonia Gandhi's letter to party men in which she attributed the rise of Naxalism to the government's wrong policies of neglecting tribal areas.

"There are five types of Maoists - (i) those who support the ideology, (ii) those who take up arms for a violent struggle, (iii) those who operate under the garb of human rights to provide a protective shield to the accused (iv) who use misinformation as a tool to mislead people and (v) who use statements in a democratic process to subvert action against the Maoist." He recalled his statement in the Parliament where he accused the Congress of being "half-Maoists."

Claiming that the Dr Raman Singh-led government has sternly dealt with Maoism, Jaitley said the nation should take a lesson from Chhattisgarh on how to deal with insurgency and extremism. When pointed out that Maoists had targeted and massacred Congress leaders, Jaitley said, "Everyone knows what happened and one Congress leader had even spilled the beans by accusing his own leadership of hatching the conspiracy."

Taking on Sonia Gandhi for her claims that poverty had increased in Chhattisgarh, Jaitley said the AICC president was misleading the people by making such statements in her public rally. "She should be aware that there has been a double-digit decline in poverty in Chhattisgarh," he said.

Claiming that country was in the dire need of a "decisive and strong" leadership, the senior BJP leader said the Congress at the centre is directionless and its leaders uninspiring.

Castigating the Union government for price rise, Jaitley said this would prove to be the Congress's nemesis. People are directly affected with the rising prices of onion, tomatoes, food and petroleum products, he said adding that the Congress will pay the price for it, he said.

Talking about his party, Jaitley said that the BJP is aiming to win four of the five states that are going to polls and Dr Raman Singh's political image and performance in the past decade is an asset for the BJP in Chhattisgarh. "There is credibility in his leadership", he said adding that all opinion polls were in BJP's favour.
