Atal Bihari Vaypayee’s niece failed in ‘Agnipariksha’ by quitting BJP, Sushma Swaraj says

RAIPUR: For the first time after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vaypayee's niece Karuna Shukla quit the party, Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday hit out at her saying that she had failed in "agnipariksha" or the trial by fire.

Leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj said, "She had a long association with the BJP. She has held all party posts, except of the party president. She used to teach party workers about party discipline. But when it was needed from her, she herself failed in the litmus test."

Addressing a press conference here, Swaraj admitted that there could be some anti-incumbency against legislators from within the party. However, the party always tries to sweeten the deal for leaders who get annoyed after being denied tickets.

Taking a dig at Prime Minister's visit to Raipur in the midst of election campaign, Swaraj said that, "If Prime Minister says that he gave Rs three lakh crore to the state government then it's a statement that damages the federal structure. Whatever the Centre gives to the state, it's the revenue the centre gained from the states."

She also made it a point deride the Prime Minister for having addressed party workers in an indoor stadium, instead of addressing a public meeting in an election bound state.

Asked about the NOTA (None of the above) option, Swaraj said, "NOTA is a new experiment and we should wait for the results rather than commenting on it. If Naxalites are using it as an option then we should wait for the result."

Swaraj said the BJP was poised to win the assembly elections in four states, except Mizoram.

Referring to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's statement that Chhattisgarh PCC chief Nandkumar Patel was killed because he was all set to become the chief minister, she said there was no need for the BJP to indulge in any such conspiracy as it was confident of Raman Singh's victory for the third consecutive term. "Rahul should examine within the Congress itself as to who is the culprit," she added.
