CHENNAI: The opposition DMK on Monday urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to derecognize the ruling party and withdraw or suspend its election symbol (two leaves) since the party violated the model code of conduct in force in Salem district ahead of the byelection to the Yercaud reserved constituency, scheduled to be held on December 4.

In a memorandum to the election commission, the DMK alleged that the AIADMK violated the model code of conduct and the order issued by the chief electoral officer and various instructions issued by the ECI. The party alleged that the ruling party promoted its symbol in the state at the cost of the public exchequer.

DMK parliamentary party leader T R Baalu met chief election commissioner V S Sampath and handed over a memorandum signed by party's organization secretary T K S Elangovan and deputy general secretary V P Duraisamy which said there had been violations of the model code by the state government and the ruling AIADMK.

The DMK alleged that 32 ministers were campaigning in Yercaud and the AIADMK was distributing bicycles and laptops in Thumbal and Vellalapatty areas, while the state administration was inaugurating new buildings.

The party demanded derecognition of the AIADMK, besides withdrawal of its symbol under the EC's symbol order. The DMK cited a few occasions in which the AIADMK had allegedly violated the model code of conduct.

The byelection was necessitated by the death of AIADMK MLA C Perumal.
