CHENNAI: Amidst large-scale protests across the state against external affairs minister Salman Khurshid participating in Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), slated to be held in Sri Lanka from November 15 to 17, Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday moved a resolution in the assembly demanding that India boycott the summit. The special session of the assembly was convened at 6.00 pm and she moved the resolution as soon as the session began.

The resolution said the Union government's decision to send a delegation under Khurshid's leadership was causing "deep anguish" to Tamils. India's participation in the external affairs ministers' conference on November 13 and the main summit later would mean the country was endorsing all the inhuman practices perpetrated by the Lankan regime. India would also have to take the blame for making Sri Lankan president Maninda Rajapaksa chairman of Chogm for the next two years. Tamils would not tolerate it, the resolution said.

Leaders of various parties like DMK, DMDK, Congress, CPI and CPM will speak before the resolution is put to vote later in the evening.

Earlier, on October 29, the assembly had passed a unanimous resolution urging the Centre to boycott CHOGM summit by respecting the sentiments of Tamils. As Tamil Nadu parties mounted pressure on the Central government, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh opted out of the conference. However, the government said Khurshid would participate in CHOGM.
