While most part of his 15-minute speech was devoted to paying tributes to the party's slain leader and the erstwhile strongman of his constituency, Nand Kumar Patel, an aggressive and emotional Rahul concluded his speech with a clarion call to party workers and support of getting the state rid of the "chor and looteras". "I want not one but 500 Nandu Patels in Chhattisgarh who will get the state rid of these thieves", he said amid applause from the audience.
Canvassing for party candidate and Nand Kumar Patel's younger son, Umesh, Rahul described the former PCC president as a "grassroot" leader who always fought the peoples' fight. In an attempt to strike an emotional chord with the residents of the constituency, Rahul addressed Nand Kumar by his nickname "Nandu".
"This is Nandu Patel's 'Karam bhoomi'", he said while claiming that he had instantly recognised the leadership qualities of the slain leader because of his simplicity and pain and love for the people of the state. "Nandu Bhaiya rose from the grassroot levels but never forgot his roots. He never wanted any official position in the party or the government but wanted only to fight for the peoples' cause", he said.
Saying that 'Nandu' had a heart of a 'sarpanch', Rahul said, "He undertook the yatra that claimed his life in order to make the people aware of the loot of the state's natural wealth by the government". Castigating the BJP for the poor law and order in the state, Rahul said, "For the thousands of tribal, backward classes, women and poor the entire state is like Jhiram Ghati and everyday is May 25, as people are exploited and killed just like the massacre of the Congress leaders".
Urging the people to vote for the Congress, Rahul said if "Nandu" were alive, he would have become the chief minister and would have ruled the state for nothing less the 15 years. "His heart bled for the people and he represented the Congress ideology", he said.
