"I had raised this issue in the recent Intelligence Bureau conference...my worry is being proved right," he told reporters here, when asked to react to the website's revelations about a dozen IT companies offering online reputation management services to help politicians artificially boost their popularity, gain followers and engage in smear campaigns.
Shinde suggested he was gathering details regarding misuse of social platforms for such make-believe online campaigns.
In his address to the DGP conference here last week, Shinde had lamented the "mischievous" use of the social media to spark off communal trouble, ethnic clashes and revive militancy in states like Punjab, and said there was need to monitor such propaganda over the internet.
"While government favours freedom of expression, mischievous use of this medium (social media websites) to foment trouble needs to be checked," he had told the state police chiefs. Cobrapost, which conducted the sting operation named 'Operation Blue Virus', claimed to have exposed about two dozen IT companies allegedly in the business of online reputation management.
Among other things, the IT companies were allegedly offering their clients a fake following on Facebook and Twitter, and indulged in negative publicity against a political leader or a party, or a corporate house, at the behest of their opposite camp, for money.
