JALANDHAR: As Gurbax Singh Khalsa's hunger strike demanding release of six Sikh prisoners, who have already completed their jail terms, has completed 36 days and it has started attracting attention national attention four Delhi based prominent personalities have written to Gujarat governor to order release of one of these sic detainees Lal Singh as he had already served at national level.

Prominent columnist and Ex-MP Kuldip Nayyar, senior supreme court advocates HS Phoolka and Colin Gonsalves and Citizens of Democracy secretary and noted human rights activist ND Pancholi in a joint letter to Gujarat governor have written that Lal Singh, resident of village Aklgarh near Phagwar was awarded Life-imprisonment in the year 1997 for recovery of arms at Dadar railway station in 1992 and has been in jail since 24 years.

They have also cited judgment of Punjab and Haryan High Court of August 23, 2012 stating that he had has not committed any murder and the only allegation against him was regarding conspiracy and recovery of Arms. "The High Court has recommended the State Government three times to consider his release. The High Court also took note in the judgment that he was released on Parole six times and he rejoined without disturbing any peace. Further the High Court again recommended reconsidering his request because the relevant letters of the SSP and the above mentioned facts which does not involve him in any criminal activity during parole, has not been considered," the four pointed out in their joint letter.

They also reproduced a leter written by Kapurthala SSP of July 28, 2006Which said "he enjoyed parole on six occasions, while undergoing the sentence and surrendered back without disturbance of any peace. No resident of the village has any objection with regard to his living in village after undergoing imprisonment for life."

Mentioning that Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa's entered in its 36th day and his physical condition was considerably deteriorated they have urged the Gujarat governor to order Lal Singh's release as this is a highly emotive issue in the State of Punjab and atmosphere in the State is surcharged.

"The delay in this matter may complicate the issue and may disturb the hard-earned peace in the State of Punjab which has just gained normalcy after dark era of militancy," the four said while striking a note of caution.
