Modi snoopgate: UPA govt’s move to constitute probe panel shows its desperation, BJP says

CHENNAI: Accusing the UPA government at the Centre of 'stooping to any level to malign' BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, senior party leader M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday said the attempt to constitute a commission of inquiry into the alleged snooping episode in Gujarat in which there was no complaint exposed the 'desperation' of the Congress in the run up to the general elections.

Addressing a press meet in Chennai, Naidu said the Union home and law ministries were busy 'trying to fabricate a case' as the government was 'rattled by the growing popularity' of Narendra Modi. "Snoopgate will become a sweepgate (sweeping Congress out of power at the Centre)," he warned.

He said a close study of the Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh assembly election results showed that the Congress was losing its traditional voters among the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and minorities.

Replying to a question, he said it would be difficult for the leader of any party to muster the numbers to be in a position to form a government at the Centre. "Atal Bihari Vajpayee found it tough to garner the support of 272 MPs, even with the 183 seats our party won in the 1999 Lok Sabha elections," he told reporters when asked about the resolution passed at the AIADMK executive and general council meeting on Thursday. The AIADMK resolution said party chief and Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa had the ability to become the prime minister.

"A party is free to pass a resolution to project its leader as the PM candidate, but the choice of its cadres should become the choice of the people," he remarked. Vajpayee, as the dominant party leader, was able to head the 23-party coalition and command respect, he said.

On DMK chief M Karunanidhi's remark that Gujarat chief minister and BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is a 'good man,' Naidu said, "Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) is a mature politician. He understands the pulse of the people and he is telling the truth".

The BJP and the DMK had not approached each other to form an alliance, he clarified.
