MOODBIDRI: If her detractors accused Jayanthi Natrajan of sitting on files pertaining to her ministry, her successor M Veerappa Moily is a man on the move in the union ministry of environment and forest. And this he has done so despite being in charge of "heavy ministry" that his other current assignment as union minister for petroleum and natural gas brings with it. He has cleared 200 files in the first 20 days in office as environment minister.
Reeling off these statistics at a function to lay the foundation stone for 400-metre synthetic track here on Sunday, Moily said, "I do not leave office before clearing files brought in the tappal. I do not have the habit of taking files home. When PM gave me responsibility of this ministry, I took it as a challenge," Moily said adding that it is a herculean task for each file of the environment ministry runs in to 200-odd pages and needs closer scrutiny.
Noting that he would clear the remaining 500-files in the next 20-odd days, Moily said, "The files contain proposals that entail investment in projects starting from Rs 10 lakh to ones that can spell prosperity for the nation in an unimaginable way." The reference to the latter was to the big ticket projects such as the iron and steel project that South Korean giant Posco is planning in Odisha. The files cleared by Moily entail investment of over Rs 4 lakh crore.
Taking on detractors indirectly for questioned the speed at which he is going ahead in clearing pending files, not withstanding concerns expressed by the Greens, Moily said, "If you find any work to be true, then go ahead and do it." Carefully wording this, Moily said this more to sound as advice given to the minister for youth empowerment and sports K Abhayachandra Jain. But the overall connotations of his remarks were hard to be missed.
