JAMMU: The winter capital of Jammu & Kashmir was on Wednesday rocked by as many as eight anti-government protests by different organizations amid extreme cold conditions, with two group of demonstrators clashing with policemen.

More than 150 youths, who had appeared in the recruitment examination for the posts of jail wardens in 2010, protested demanding publication of the final results. The job-aspirants shouted anti-government slogans and clashed with policemen.

"While the government is bringing back militants from Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) and rehabilitating them here, it is forcing peace-loving youths of the state into militancy by denying them employment despite appearing (in exams) as per rules," said one of the protesters, who were on a hunger strike for the past 38 days.

Meanwhile, casual workers of the power development department (PDD) took out a protest rally and marched towards the Civil Secretariat demanding regularization of their jobs. They also clashed with policemen when they were stopped from marching towards the secretariat.

"We have been working in the department as casual and need-based labourers for the past six years but the government did not regularize our jobs," said a protester.

Similarly, workers of Khidmat centres staged a demonstration demanding a financial package for the centres as they had been incurring huge losses.

Kashmiri Pandit migrants also held a protest in front of the office of the relief commissioner, and demanded enhancement of the relief to Rs 10,000 per family.

Dogra Front and Shiv Sena, besides BJP also held protests in various areas of Jammu against unscheduled power cuts and water crisis.

NCP youth wing activists staged a demonstration against the remarks of senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Prashant Bushan and burnt his effigy.

In the meantime, a section of state government employees, under the banner of Joint Consultative Committee (JCC), held a protest in support of their demands, including enhancement of retirement age from 58 to 60 years, removal of pay anomalies and regularisation of daily wage workers.
