MYSORE: The autorickshaw fares were revised on Tuesday by the regional transport authority but the deadlock over the fare revision could continue with the drivers not happy with the hike.

They are planning to continue agitation even when the RTA to hiked the minimum fare to Rs 25 and Rs 13 per kilometer. The drivers are insisting that they need Rs 30 minimum fare and Rs 15 per kilometer and planning to continue the agitation given that they have the support of Mysore MP Adagooru H Vishwanath. Earlier, the minimum fare was Rs 20 and Rs 11 per kilometer. At Bangalore, the minimum fare is Rs 25 and the commuter pay Rs 12 per kilometre.

During the meeting when DC C Shikha, who heads to the RTA, announced the quantum of the hike, the drivers got angry and walked out of the meeting. But toughening their stand, the transport authorities issued notification effecting the hike from Tuesday midnight. RTA is the quasi-judicial body empowered to fix the rates. Besides the DC, SP Abhinav Khare and RTOs Ramesh Dubey and H K Sidappa Shetty attended the meeting.

Though she was under attack from the MP, who accused her of negligence in attending to the auto drivers demands, Shikha didn't budge. There won't be any changes in the fares. The RTA decision is final, she said indicating that she won't change her stance.

The officials said they have arrived at the revised fares based on the fuel hike since April 26, 2013 when the last hike was affected. It also factors in the increase in the operation cost including spare parts for autos. A senior RTO official said: "The decision is final. The drivers have to accept it. There won't be any further revision."

Balancing act

The officials said they have to balance the increase with the concerns of the users, who are largely from the middle class. They will be affected in case the hike is steep, they argue. The officials have in fact tried to cut down the burden on the middle class even as they have increased the fares. Earlier the minimum fare of Rs 20 was for 1.8 km which is now increased to 1.9 km seeking to handle the criticism from the public.

A section of the auto drivers admit that the middle class, who form their clientele, will be affected but said they cannot manage at the revised rates. The way out is to subsidize the auto LPG. This will help both, a leader of auto drivers, who didn't wish to be named, argued.

The meeting turned stormy when the DC said they cannot accept the drivers demand to increase the minimum fares to Rs 30. Though the driver tried to explain their point, she said the RTA will have to factor in other concerns and decide. Angered, the drivers walked out of the meeting terming the decision as unscientific and unilateral. They were also upset that the RTA didn't approve their demand to charge 50 per cent extra for commuters to industrial suburbs. However, the officials said they will look into their complaints like location of prepaid auto counter at KSRTC bus stand and plying of autos without valid documents.
