Government to expand integrated check post for 24x7 India-Pak trade

AMRITSAR: With India and Pakistan agreeing for 24x7 trading from across Attari (India) and Wagah (Pakistan) land border, the Land Ports Authority of India has initiated process for acquiring land for expansion of India's first integrated check post (ICP) at Attari.

According to sources, the existing 130 acres of ICP could further be extended to another 200 acres of land with additional facilities for trade including railway terminals.

Deputy commissioner Ravi Bhagat informed TOI on Thursday that the administration had given details of 300 acres of land to Land Ports Authority of India that would eventually decide how much land they required for expansion of ICP.

After meeting with Pakistan's Commerce and textile industry minister Khurram Dastagir Khan on January 19th the Indian trade minister Anand Sharma had informed that both sides had agreed to open Attari-Wagah 24x7 for trade.

Sources informed that the process of acquiring of land would soon begin once Land Ports Authority of India finalizes the expansion plans. Sources also informed that process of installation of much awaited full body scanners at ICP would also begin soon.

Home minister P Chidambaram had laid the foundation stone of India's one of the prestigious Rs 150 crore project of ICP spread in 130 acres of land on February 20, 2010 and was commissioned on April 13, 2012. Goods including fresh vegetables, soybean, cotton, polypropylene, polyethylene, Carbon dioxide etc were exported to Pakistan while goods including cement, soda ash, gypsum, glass, rags, sugar and dry dates were imported from Pakistan via ICP.

Meanwhile Border Area Sangarash Committee president Rattan Singh Randhawa informed that farmers of border village Roranwala held a meeting with them seeking their help to ensure adequate compensation against acquisition of their lands. \

Randhawa said not only adequate compensation but government must give permanent employment to the deserving persons besides partnership in the projects so they could have a mean of permanent livelihood he said.
