LUCKNOW: As BSP and BJP get ready to slug it out in the political arena, and mark their presence with each organizing a rally bigger than the other, railways get ready to rake in the moolah.
The two upcoming political rallies in Lucknow - BSP rally on Wednesday and BJP rally on March 2 - will leave railways richer by over 8 crores.
Since rallies would be a show of strength, mobilizing maximum crowd to the rally ground is what the two political opponents are vying for. Crowd would be brought to Lucknow through various modes of transport, trains being one of the major modes of travel for the rally crowd.
BSP has booked 19 rally special trains, while BJP has booked 27. "We have received the payment from BSP," said Sr DCM, NR, Lucknow Ashwini Srivastava.
Rally special trains are of minimum 18 coaches, which can be increased to 21 coaches given the demand and payment from the organizing party.
Composition of the train is also decided as per the demand of the party. But, most of the political parties keep it confined till general and sleeper coaches, with AC coaches added rarely.
Railways charge for a minimum 500 kms. Going by all these calculations, booking a single train fetches about Rs 16 to 17 lakh to railways. BSP, said sources, has paid railways approximately Rs 3.5 crore for January 15 rally.
BJP, since it has demanded more trains than BSP, would pay more, somewhere around Rs 4.6 crore. Railway officials are still negotiating the arrangements for BJP rally as trains would arrive at Lucknow from several places like Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Meerut, Moradabad, Mathura, Chitrakoot, Muzaffarnagar, Azamgarh, Deoria, Sonbhadra and Saharanpur.
Though earning from the rally special trains go to the booking station than a particular division, at the end of the day it adds to the railways' coffers.
On January 15, while eight rally special trains booked by BSP will be managed by north eastern railways, the rest will be handled by northern railways.
